Blue Agate: the complete guide
Blue Agate is a slab made of agate sections in blue and light blue tones, bonded with resin. The concentric rings of the agates and their transparency make it perfect for luxury backlit surfaces.
History and origin
Agate is a variety of chalcedony, i.e. microcrystalline quartz, which forms in rock cavities with characteristic concentric rings. The sections are cut, arranged by hand and consolidated with resin to create the slabs. Very intense blue shades are often obtained by dyeing, a common practice in agate processing. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.
Look and veining
Each section shows concentric rings in blue, light blue and white, with a crystalline, sometimes hollow core. The arrangement and size of the pieces make every slab unique. Polished, it has a glassy look; against the light the rings light up to great effect.

Recommended uses
Ideal for backlit walls, bar counters, reception desks, tables and bathroom tops. Not recommended for floors, exteriors or tops exposed to heat.
Care and maintenance
Clean with neutral products and soft cloths, avoiding solvents, acetone and abrasives. Do not place hot pans or objects on it: the resin could be marked.

FAQ
Is the blue colour natural?
Natural agates mostly have soft grey-blue tones; very vivid blues generally result from dyeing the fragments. On request we will tell you the characteristics of the slab offered.
Can it be used for a backlit bar counter?
Yes, it is one of the most dramatic applications. It is designed with an even LED system and a transparent backing, for example glass.
Is it scratch-resistant?
Agates are hard, about 6.5-7 Mohs, but the resin binding them is softer. With use, marks may appear along the resin lines.
