Crystal Quartz: the complete guide
Crystal Quartz in slabs is a composite of clear quartz fragments, transparent or milky. It is chosen for its luminosity and because it is among the semi-precious stones that perform best when backlit, with an ice-like effect.
History and origin
Crystal quartz, also called rock crystal, is the purest form of quartz and has been worked since antiquity for vases, jewellery and precious objects. It is found in many countries and the fragments used for the slabs come from the international market. The resin that binds them makes it possible to create continuous large-format surfaces. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.
Look and veining
The surface is an assembly of white, transparent and pearl-grey crystals, with small natural inclusions. The density of the fragments and the presence of lighter areas vary between slabs. Polished, it is brilliant; with light from behind it becomes evenly white and luminous, and also works with coloured LEDs.
Technical properties (indicative)
| Classification | semi-precious stone (quartz) in a composite slab |
|---|---|
| Bulk density | approx. 2,400-2,600 kg/m³ (indicative) |
| Mohs hardness | 7 for the fragments, resin softer |
| Water absorption | very low |
| Main use | interiors, decorative and backlit |
| Acid resistance | excellent for the quartz; the resin is sensitive to solvents and heat |
Recommended uses
Excellent for luminous walls, bar and reception counters, washbasins, bathroom vanity tops and decorative panels. Not suitable for floors, exteriors or hobs.
Care and maintenance
Clean with water and a neutral detergent, drying to avoid limescale marks. Avoid abrasives and solvents and place hot objects only on protective mats.

FAQ
Is Crystal Quartz the same as engineered quartz?
No. Engineered quartz is an industrial agglomerate of quartz sand and resin; Crystal Quartz is made of natural, clearly visible fragments of rock crystal.
How does it look when backlit?
Superb: light passes easily through the crystals and the wall becomes a luminous surface. With RGB LEDs its colour can even be varied.
Is it suitable for a bathroom top?
Yes, quartz is hard and has low absorption. It simply needs careful handling to protect the resin from heat and aggressive products.
How do I order it?
On request: we send a quote and photos of the slabs, also backlit, once we have received dimensions and project.
