Apatite Azul
Guide

Apatite Azul: the complete guide

Apatite Azul in slabs is made of fragments of blue apatite, a mineral with an intense colour, bonded with resin. It is chosen for high-impact decorative surfaces in a deep, brilliant blue.

Suitable for: BathroomWall cladding

History and origin

Apatite is a phosphate mineral that occurs in many colours; the blue varieties are among the most prized in jewellery and collecting. For interiors, the fragments are selected and consolidated with resin into slabs of usable size. It is a rare material in interior surfaces, reserved for exclusive projects. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.

Look and veining

The fragments range from deep blue to turquoise, with veins and darker areas. Every slab has a different mosaic in the size and colour of the pieces. Polishing enhances the saturation of the blue and its brilliance.

FAQ

Is apatite as hard as other semi-precious stones?

No, at about 5 Mohs it is softer than agates and quartzes. It is therefore recommended for vertical surfaces or lightly used tops.

Can it be used in a bathroom?

Yes, for walls or fronts away from direct splashes; on a top it must be protected and cleaned only with neutral detergents, because apatite is sensitive to acids.

Can it be backlit?

Apatite has little translucency at slab thickness, so backlighting has a limited effect. It looks best with good front lighting.
