Blue Spectrolite: the complete guide

History and origin

The name spectrolite originated in Finland to describe a particularly iridescent labradorite, now also available from other sources. The optical phenomenon that makes it famous, called labradorescence, depends on the lamellar structure of the feldspar. In slab form it is offered as a composite of fragments bonded with resin, intended for high-end interiors. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.

Look and veining

The background is anthracite grey, almost black, crossed by crystals that light up in blue, light blue and sometimes green depending on the viewing angle. Every slab has its own arrangement of fragments, so the effect should be assessed on photos of the batch. Polishing brings out the iridescence to the full, while matt finishes largely dull it.

Recommended uses

Ideal for feature walls, bathroom vanity tops, reception counters, bar tops and tables. It is not suitable for walkway floors or for kitchen worktops where hot pans are placed, because the resin cannot withstand direct heat.

Care and maintenance

Clean with a soft cloth and a neutral detergent, avoiding abrasive products, solvents and aggressive limescale removers. Use trivets and coasters to protect the resin from heat and scratches.
