Wonder Onyx: the complete guide
Wonder Onyx is a decorative banded onyx, translucent and suitable for backlighting. It is chosen to create luminous, dramatic surfaces in interiors.
History and origin
Like other commercial onyxes, it forms through the deposition of calcium carbonate in thin layers, which gives rise to the typical banded pattern. It is an imported material known by this trade name, whose origin may vary depending on the batch. Marmi di Carrara has handled it in blocks and slabs and supplies it on request.
Look and veining
The background is light, crossed by bands and shadings that change in tone along the slab. Every slab is different, and consecutive slabs can be bookmatched to obtain symmetrical effects. Polished, it shows all its depth; with light behind it the bands become even more pronounced.

FAQ
Can it be backlit?
Yes, it is translucent: with LED panels placed at an even distance the bands stand out spectacularly. For meshed slabs the most suitable type of reinforcement is assessed.
Is it suitable for a bathroom vanity top?
Yes for washbasins and countertops, taking care with cosmetics and limescale removers, which can dull the polish.
How does it differ from marble?
Onyx has a layered structure and a transparency that marble lacks; however, it is more fragile and should be used mainly on vertical surfaces or furnishings.
