Aurisina Stone: complete guide
Aurisina Stone is a compact limestone from the Trieste Karst, in ivory and beige tones. It is chosen for its strength and a long tradition of use in the architecture of north-eastern Italy.
History and origin
It is quarried in the Aurisina area, on the Karst plateau near Trieste, and its use has ancient roots in the region. It has been widely used in the buildings of Trieste and Friuli for façades, floors, stairs and monuments. It exists in several commercial varieties, from the most uniform to those with a 'flowered' pattern due to fossil fragments. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.
Look and veining
The background is ivory or light beige, with a more or less dense pattern of fossil fragments that in the 'flowered' varieties creates a decorative effect. Variability depends on the bed and the variety chosen. Honed or polished, it looks refined, while bush-hammered or sandblasted it becomes lighter and suitable for outdoor use.
