Pietra di Trani: the complete guide

Pietra di Trani is a compact limestone from Apulia, light beige in colour, from which the famous seaside cathedral is built. Durable and bright, it is also excellent outdoors.

History and origin

It is quarried around Trani and nearby towns in northern Apulia. It is the stone of the Romanesque cathedrals of Apulia, starting with Trani's, and has been used for centuries for buildings, paving and street furniture. Varieties include Trani Chiaro, Fiorito and Cocciolato. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.

Look and veining

A light beige background, from cream to hazel, with small spots, fossils and fine veins depending on the variety. Fiorito has a richer pattern, Chiaro is more uniform.
