Porfido Rosso Antico is the imperial stone par excellence, a purple-red volcanic rock with small light crystals. Today it is chosen almost exclusively for restoration and small elements of the very highest value.
History and origin
It comes from the Eastern Desert of Egypt, where the Romans quarried it for sarcophagi, columns, statues and floors, associating it with imperial power because of its purple colour. The ancient quarries have been inactive for many centuries, so the material available comes from salvaged antique pieces. It was reused in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance in Cosmatesque floors, roundels and inlays. Marmi di Carrara can check its availability on request.
Look and veining
The background is dark purple-red, with small light crystals of white or pinkish feldspar evenly distributed. Differences between pieces concern the intensity of the red and the density of the crystals. Polished, it has a deep, silky look, the traditional way in which it has always been used.

Recommended uses
It is used for the restoration of historic floors and furnishings, inlays, pietra dura work, decorative roundels and small objects. Its limited availability and value make it unsuitable for large surfaces. Technically it would be very hard-wearing, but its practical use is almost purely decorative.
Care and maintenance
It is very resistant and is cleaned with water and a neutral detergent. On historic pieces avoid aggressive treatments and rely on restorers. A protective wax can revive the polish.
Pairings
- Serpentino verde antico in Cosmatesque inlays
- white statuary marbles
- gold and gilded bronze
