Tennessee Fleuri: the complete guide
Tennessee Fleuri is an American marble in pink and grey tones, with a fine, flowery mottling. It is chosen for its warm, discreet colour, suited to both classic and contemporary interiors.
History and origin
So-called Tennessee marble is, geologically, a compact, polishable limestone rich in fossil fragments, quarried in the eastern part of the state. In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries it was widely used in the United States for floors, cladding and public buildings. The fleuri variety is recognisable by its mottled pattern, livelier than the uniform versions. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.
Look and veining
The background alternates pale pink, grey and brownish tones, with small spots and thin veins reminiscent of a floral pattern. Variation between slabs is moderate, but the ratio of pink to grey can change from one block to another. Polishing enhances its depth of colour, while honed and brushed finishes give a softer, more natural effect.
Technical properties (indicative)
| Classification | compact polishable limestone (commercial marble) |
|---|---|
| Bulk density | approx. 2,700 kg/m³ (indicative) |
| Mohs hardness | approx. 3 |
| Water absorption | low |
| Main use | interiors |
| Acid resistance | low: sensitive to citrus, vinegar and limescale removers |
Recommended uses
It lends itself to indoor floors, cladding, stairs, bathrooms and furnishings. It is not recommended for heavily used kitchen worktops or for outdoor floors in harsh climates, where the polished finish would quickly lose its shine.
Care and maintenance
Use only pH-neutral detergents and wipe up any acidic splashes immediately, as they dull the surface. A stain-proofing impregnating sealer reduces absorption, but does not prevent chemical attack by acids.
Pairings
- cherry or light walnut
- polished brass and bronze
- fabrics and walls in sage or warm grey tones
FAQ
Is it a true marble?
Geologically it is a compact limestone; in the trade it is called marble because, like marbles, it polishes well and is worked in the same way. Its maintenance is also that typical of calcareous materials.
Can it be used in a bathroom?
Yes, for floors, cladding and vanity tops. Acidic limescale removers should be avoided in favour of neutral detergents, and shower areas should be dried to limit limescale deposits.
Which finish should I choose for a floor?
Matt honed is the most practical choice because it hides foot-traffic marks better; polished is more striking but requires more care and, over time, some restoration.
