Agra Red Sandstone: complete guide
Agra Red Sandstone is an Indian sandstone with a brick-red colour, compact and fine-grained. It is chosen for its warm tone and good resistance to the weather, making it ideal outdoors.
History and origin
Red sandstone is one of the most typical stones of the historic architecture of northern India, used also in large monumental complexes. The trade name Agra Red recalls this tradition; the material comes from sandstone deposits in northern India. Today it is exported for paving, cladding and garden furniture. Look and veining
The background is brick red, with variations towards pink, brown or purplish and fine layering. Small light spots or specks may appear. A natural cleft finish brings out the layering, while honed or sandblasted it shows a more uniform colour.

Recommended uses
It is suitable for outdoor paving, paths, pool surrounds, walls, façade cladding and stairs. It is also used indoors for floors and walls with a warm, rustic effect; for kitchen worktops it is not the most suitable choice because of its porosity.
Care and maintenance
Clean with water and a soft brush; a breathable water repellent limits absorption, moss and efflorescence. Avoid high-pressure washers used at close range, which can erode the surface.

What is the difference between sandstone and limestone?
Sandstone is made up of grains, mostly of quartz, cemented together: it generally resists acids better than a limestone, but it is more porous.
Does the red colour fade in the sun?
The colour of the stone is stable; over time a slight surface patina may form, which can be limited with periodic cleaning and a water repellent.
Is it suitable for a garden exposed to frost?
Many batches have good frost resistance; for harsh climates we recommend adequate thicknesses and checking the technical data sheet of the material.
