Bianco Kozani: complete guide
Bianco Kozani is a fine-grained Greek white marble, bright and with a discreet pattern. It is chosen when a light, uniform surface is needed, often at a lower cost than the more famous whites.
History and origin
It is quarried in the Kozani area in Western Macedonia, one of the Greek regions with the highest concentration of white marble quarries. The marbles of this region have been exported for decades to Europe, the Middle East and Asia for floors and cladding. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.
Look and veining
The background is white, slightly grey or ivory in places, with fine, faint veins. There may be differences in tone between slabs from different blocks, so for large surfaces selection by batch is advisable. Polished, it is glossy and bright, while honed or brushed it takes on a softer white.
Technical properties (indicative)
| Classification | fine-grained marble, often with a dolomitic component |
|---|---|
| Bulk density | approx. 2,750 kg/m³ (indicative) |
| Mohs hardness | approx. 3-3.5 |
| Water absorption | very low |
| Main use | interiors, also exteriors in mild climates |
| Acid resistance | low: sensitive to lemon, vinegar and limescale removers |
Recommended uses
Suitable for floors, cladding, stairs, bathrooms and window sills; its compact grain also makes it suitable for large formats. It can be used for a kitchen worktop but requires care with acids and stains. Outdoors it should be assessed according to the climate and the chosen finish.
Care and maintenance
Use pH-neutral detergents and wipe up coloured or acidic liquids immediately. A stain-repellent treatment protects the white from coffee, wine and oil. On polished floors, periodic honing restores the shine.
Pairings
- light natural oak
- satin steel and matt black
- pearl-grey or sage walls
FAQ
Does Bianco Kozani turn yellow?
A well-protected white marble does not yellow by itself; yellow stains usually come from rust, unsuitable adhesives or aggressive products. For installation, use white adhesives specific to marble.
Is it suitable for stairs?
Yes, its fine, compact grain makes it suitable for treads and risers; outdoors an anti-slip finish such as brushing or sandblasting is better.
What is the difference from the Carrara whites?
Bianco Kozani generally has a more uniform, less veined background; the Apuan whites have more distinctive grey veining and a better-documented history of use.
