Blanco Extremadura Granite: complete guide

Blanco Extremadura is a light Spanish granite, white-grey with dark speckling. It is chosen for bright paving and cladding that must stand the test of time.

History and origin

Extremadura, in western Spain, is a region with a long tradition of quarrying light and grey granites. Blanco Extremadura is widespread on the European market for urban paving, façades, stairs and tops. It is appreciated for its bright appearance and good workability. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.

Look and veining

The background is greyish white with light quartz and feldspar crystals and small black minerals, often mica. The grain is medium and the pattern fairly uniform, with slight variations in tone between lots. Flaming makes it very light and uniform, while polishing highlights its crystals.

Recommended uses

Highly suitable for outdoor paving, squares, pavements, kerbs, stairs and façades. Indoors it is used for floors, kitchen worktops and bathrooms. Being light, on kitchen worktops it should be protected against oil and coloured liquids.

Care and maintenance

Outdoors, periodic washing with water and a neutral detergent; a water repellent reduces dirt and smog stains. On interior tops use a stain-proofing impregnator. Avoid aggressive de-icing salts and strong acids.

Pairings

  • porphyry or dark basalt for borders and patterns
  • pine or larch for outdoor furniture
  • stainless steel and glass on façades

FAQ

Is it suitable for public paving?

Yes, light Spanish granites are widely used for squares and pavements thanks to their resistance to wear and frost.

Which finish should I choose for exteriors?

Flamed, bush-hammered or sandblasted, all slip-resistant; polished should be reserved for walls or interiors.

Does it stain easily?

It absorbs little, but being light it shows oil and dirt more: in the kitchen and outdoors a protective treatment is useful.
