Maulbronn Sandstone: complete guide

History and origin

It is quarried in the Maulbronn area, in Baden-Württemberg, and also belongs to the Triassic sandstones known as Schilfsandstein. The area is associated with important historic buildings in local sandstone, including the famous Maulbronn monastery complex. Today it is used for façades, architectural elements and restoration. Look and veining

The background is yellow-green, sometimes tending towards ochre or grey, with darker veins and spots due to iron oxides. The fine grain allows precise working, while the colour may vary between blocks. Chiselled, tooled or matt honed finishes are the most traditional.

Recommended uses

It is used for façades, portals, cornices, window sills, sculptures and walls, as well as interior floors and cladding. It is not recommended for kitchen worktops or surfaces prone to grease stains.

Care and maintenance

Gentle cleaning with water and neutral detergents, without acids or sandblasting. Outdoors it is important to ensure proper rainwater drainage to limit films and deterioration.
