Zeera Green Slate: the complete guide

Zeera Green Slate is an Indian slate in mottled grey-green tones, with a naturally cleft surface. It is chosen for cladding and paving with a natural, rustic look.

History and origin

India is one of the world's leading slate producers, exporting mainly for floors, cladding and roofing. Slates are very fine-grained metamorphic rocks that split into thin sheets along cleavage planes. Zeera Green is one of the green varieties of this production. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.

Look and veining

The grey-green background shows mottling, lighter or darker shadings and sometimes slight rust traces. The natural cleft surface shows small reliefs and variations in level that change from slab to slab. In addition to the natural finish, honing and brushing are possible, making the colour more uniform and the surface more regular.

Recommended uses

It is suitable for wall cladding, indoor and outdoor floors, bathrooms, pool surrounds and low walls. It is less suitable for kitchen worktops, where the cleft surface traps dirt and some types can stain.

Care and maintenance

Wash with water and neutral detergents, avoiding acids and aggressive products. An impregnating sealer specific to slate brings out the colour, reduces stains and makes cleft surfaces easier to clean.

Pairings

  • teak or iroko
  • stainless steel and glass
  • green plants and river pebbles

FAQ

What is the difference between the natural and honed finish?

The natural finish keeps the cleft surface, rustic and slip-resistant; honed is smooth and easier to clean, suited to interiors with a more contemporary look.

Can it be used outdoors?

Yes, for paving, cladding and pool surrounds, preferably with a natural finish. The frost resistance of the lot should be checked if it is intended for harsh climates.

Are the rust-coloured spots a defect?

In many Indian slates they are due to naturally occurring iron-bearing minerals and are part of the stone's appearance. If you do not like them, more uniform lots can be chosen.
