Cantera Verde: complete guide
Cantera Verde is a green Mexican volcanic tuff, distinctive and uncommon among building stones. It is chosen for cladding and decoration that call for a natural, out-of-the-ordinary colour.
History and origin
It belongs to the family of canteras, the volcanic stones that characterise traditional Mexican architecture, from colonial buildings to contemporary homes. The ease with which it can be carved has encouraged its use for portals, cornices and ornaments. Outside Mexico it is offered mainly for interiors and design projects. Look and veining
The colour ranges from sage green to greyish green, with small light and dark inclusions distributed throughout. The appearance is matt and slightly granular, with variations in tone between blocks. The most common finishes are matt honed, brushed and hand-carved.

Recommended uses
Suitable for walls, fireplaces, cornices, columns, fountains and sculptures. It is not recommended for high-traffic floors, kitchen worktops or façades exposed to frost in harsh climates.
Care and maintenance
Protect with a water- and oil-repellent impregnator for porous stones and repeat the treatment over time. For cleaning, water and neutral soap are enough; avoid acidic or abrasive products.

Does the green remain stable over time?
Indoors the colour is stable; outdoors, sun and weather may soften it slightly, as happens with many natural stones.
Can it be used in the bathroom?
For walls away from direct splashing yes, well treated; for showers and vanity tops less porous stones are preferable.
Can it be carved?
Yes, it is one of the easiest stones to carve, suitable for bas-reliefs, cornices and ornaments.
