Otta Slate: complete guide
Otta Slate is a dark grey-green Norwegian schistose stone, with a naturally undulating surface and micaceous glints. It is chosen for floors, roofing and cladding with a rustic Nordic character.
History and origin
It comes from Norway, where schistose stones have been used for centuries for roofs, floors and walls in traditional buildings. Commercially it is classed as slate, although geologically it belongs to the schistose rocks such as phyllites. Today it is also valued in contemporary indoor and outdoor design. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.
Look and veining
The background is dark grey-green with silvery glints due to mica, sometimes with small rust-coloured spots or specks. The natural riven surface is undulating and irregular, and changes from slab to slab. Honed or brushed, it becomes more uniform and deeper, while retaining a slight mineral sheen.

Pairings

FAQ
Is it a true slate?
Commercially yes; geologically it is a schistose metamorphic rock. In practice it offers the same qualities: low porosity, frost resistance and ease of splitting.
Are the rust specks a defect?
They are a natural characteristic of this stone; those wanting a more uniform surface can request a selection of slabs.
Can it be used in a shower?
Yes, with a riven or brushed finish it is suitable for shower floors and walls thanks to its low porosity.
