Moleanos is a light beige Portuguese limestone with a fine grain and uniform appearance. It is chosen for bright, understated floors and cladding, with a good balance between looks and cost.
History and origin
It comes from central Portugal, one of the most important areas in Europe for the production of ornamental limestones. It is widely exported and has been used for floors, façades, stairs and cladding in residential and commercial buildings. It is offered in several selections according to colour uniformity and the presence of small fossils. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.
Look and veining
The background is light beige or cream, with a fine grain and small speckles or barely visible fossils. The slabs are fairly consistent, although fine veins or slightly darker areas may appear. Honed, it looks soft and warm; brushed or sandblasted, it becomes more natural and slip-resistant.
Technical properties (indicative)
| Classification | limestone |
|---|---|
| Density | approx. 2,550 kg/m³ (indicative) |
| Mohs hardness | approx. 3 |
| Water absorption | medium-low |
| Main use | interiors, exteriors in mild climates |
| Acid resistance | low: sensitive to lemon, vinegar and limescale removers |
Recommended uses
It is suitable for interior floors, stairs, bathroom and wall cladding, and for façades or outdoor paving in climates that are not too harsh. It is not recommended for kitchen worktops because of its sensitivity to acids and stains. Outdoors, rough finishes and a water-repellent treatment are preferred.
Care and maintenance
Treat with a water- and oil-repellent protector after installation and renew it periodically. Clean with neutral detergents, avoiding limescale removers and acidic products. Wipe up wine, coffee or oil stains immediately.
Pairings
- natural oak
- matt black wrought iron
- white plaster and linen fabrics
FAQ
Is Moleanos a marble?
No, it is a sedimentary limestone: it can be honed and polished, but it is more porous and softer than most marbles.
Is it suitable for the bathroom?
Yes, for floors and cladding, provided it is treated with a protector and cleaned with neutral products.
Can it be laid outdoors?
Yes in mild climates, with a brushed or sandblasted finish; in areas with severe frost the specific selection must be checked.
