Savonnières Stone: complete guide
Savonnières Stone is a soft limestone from Lorraine with a creamy beige colour. It is chosen for façades, cladding and carvings, thanks to its ease of working and warm tone.
History and origin
It comes from Savonnières-en-Perthois, in the Meuse, in Lorraine, and is a traditional building stone of north-eastern France. It is a porous, lightweight oolitic limestone, known for being easy to cut and carve. It is used in construction, restoration and architectural decoration. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.
Look and veining
The background is creamy beige, with an oolitic grain and small pores visible close up. The appearance is fairly homogeneous, with slight differences in tone. Honed or brushed finishes give a soft, natural look; carved work stays crisp.

FAQ
Why is it considered a soft stone?
It is porous and lightweight, and easy to cut and carve; that is why it is ideal for decoration, but not for floors.
Does it hold up on façades?
Yes, if laid with details that prevent standing water and protected with a breathable water repellent; the choice of quarry bed affects frost resistance.
Can I use it for a fireplace?
Yes, for fireplace cladding and surrounds it is a traditional choice, away from direct contact with the flame.
