Nilsiä Quartzite: complete guide
Nilsiä Quartzite is a light white-grey Finnish quartzite, compact and very hard. It is chosen for bright, durable surfaces, indoors and outdoors alike.
History and origin
It takes its name from the town of Nilsiä, in eastern Finland, a country whose stone tradition is based on very ancient, compact rocks. The quartzites of this area are known for their high quartz content, which gives resistance to wear and frost. It is a niche material, less widespread than South American quartzites. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.
Look and veining
The background is light, from white to pale grey, with a fine grain and a discreet pattern. Variations between slabs mainly concern slight nuances of tone. Honed and brushed finishes retain its brightness, while flamed or sandblasted ones make it more matt and non-slip.

FAQ
Is it suitable for cold climates?
Yes, its compactness and low absorption make it suitable for outdoor areas exposed to frost.
Can it be used in the bathroom?
Yes: it is unaffected by water and common detergents. For shower floors a non-slip finish is recommended.
How can it be distinguished from a white marble?
It is much harder and does not react to acids; its appearance is more mineral and less veined than classic white marbles.
