Red Jasper: the complete guide
Red Jasper is a composite slab of jasper fragments, a compact siliceous stone in an intense red. It is chosen for its full, warm colour and its textured appearance, earthier than translucent stones.
History and origin
Jasper is an opaque variety of microcrystalline quartz, coloured by the iron oxides that give it its red hue. Worked since antiquity for amulets, inlays and ornamental objects, it also appears in the tradition of Florentine pietra dura mosaic. In modern slabs the fragments are bonded with resin to obtain large surfaces. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.
Look and veining
The background is a uniform or slightly mottled red, with thin darker veins and sometimes yellowish or grey inclusions. Because the pieces have different shapes and shades, every slab has its own chromatic rhythm. Polishing gives depth to the red; the stone is not translucent and is not suited to backlighting.

FAQ
Can Red Jasper be backlit?
No, it is an opaque stone. Those looking for a red that lights up from within can consider Carnelian.
Is it suitable for a bathroom?
Yes, for vanity tops, cladding and shelves, provided you avoid aggressive limescale removers and very hot objects placed directly on it.
How does it differ from a red marble?
Red marbles such as Rosso Verona are calcareous, softer and sensitive to acids; jasper is siliceous and harder, although in a composite slab its resistance also depends on the resin.
