Egyptian Alabaster: the complete guide

Egyptian Alabaster is a translucent banded stone in cream and light honey tones, similar in structure to calcareous onyxes. It is chosen for the soft light it transmits and for its link with a long decorative tradition.

Suitable for: BathroomWall cladding

History and origin

In Egypt, the stone called alabaster, actually a banded calcite, has been used since antiquity for vases, lamps and objects. The term 'Egyptian alabaster' still refers today to this type of translucent calcareous material. It is used in cladding, lamps and furnishings where diffuse, warm light is desired. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.

Look and veining

The cream and light honey background features thin, sometimes wavy bands in amber and white tones. Transparency varies between slabs and between areas of the same slab, with milkier passages. Polished, it is luminous and deep; honed, it has a softer, waxy look.

FAQ

Are alabaster and onyx the same thing?

In the stone trade the terms overlap: Egyptian alabaster is a banded calcite like calcareous onyx. Gypsum alabaster is different: softer, it is used mainly for sculpture and decorative objects.

Can it be used for a lamp or a lampshade?

Yes, it is one of its traditional uses: cut into thin sections, it lets through a warm, diffuse light. Low-heat bulbs must be used.

Is it suitable for a bathroom?

Yes, as cladding or a decorative washbasin, with protection and neutral cleaning. It is best avoided in constantly wet areas, such as the shower tray.
