Tiger's Eye: complete guide

Tiger's eye is a variety of quartz with golden-brown bands that change in brightness as the light varies. It is chosen for precious decorative surfaces with a warm, shimmering effect.

Suitable for: BathroomWall cladding

History and origin

It forms when quartz replaces the fibres of a mineral of the amphibole group, preserving the fibrous structure that produces its typical sheen. It has long been used in jewellery and ornaments; among the best-known deposits are those in southern Africa. In interior design it appears mainly in composite slabs and small formats. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.

Look and veining

The bands alternate golden yellow, brown and dark brown, with a moving silky sheen known as chatoyancy. There are blue (hawk's eye) and reddish varieties. Polishing is essential to bring out the shimmering effect, and the pattern varies greatly from one fragment to another.

FAQ

Why does it change colour with the light?

The fibrous structure of the quartz reflects light differently depending on the angle, creating the typical shimmering effect.

Are there solid slabs of tiger's eye?

Not in sizes usable for tops: composite slabs or small formats are used.

Can it be backlit?

It is barely translucent, so backlighting has a limited effect; it is better enhanced with grazing light.
