Breccia Oniciata: complete guide

Breccia Oniciata is a brecciated marble in beige and pinkish tones, with fragments joined by light veins that in places recall onyx. It offers a warm, soft look, suited to both classic and contemporary interiors.

History and origin

It is an Italian breccia, part of the long tradition of coloured marbles used for prestigious floors, cladding and furnishings. The adjective oniciata refers to the veins and crystalline areas that recall the appearance of onyx. Colour and pattern vary considerably with the quarrying batch. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.

Look and veining

Beige, hazelnut and antique pink fragments are bound by a lighter matrix, with crystalline veins that are semi-transparent in places. Each slab has a different distribution of clasts, from a fine to a larger pattern. Polished, it gains depth and brightness; honed, it looks more even and discreet.

FAQ

Can it be backlit like onyx?

Generally not: the name recalls the appearance of some veins, but it is a non-translucent brecciated marble. For backlit panels you need to choose a genuine onyx.

Is it suitable for a floor?

Yes, in residential interiors it works well as flooring, preferably with a honed finish, which shows fewer signs of foot traffic. For very busy commercial premises periodic maintenance is advisable.

Can it be used in the bathroom?

Yes, for tops, cladding and bespoke shower trays, with adequate protection. In wet areas it is best to dry surfaces to avoid limescale deposits.
