Valcamonica Porphyry: the complete guide
Valcamonica Porphyry is a purplish-red stone from Lombardy, hard and compact. It is chosen above all for outdoor paving, where resistance to wear and frost is needed.
History and origin
The name indicates its origin in Valcamonica, the valley near Brescia also known for its rock carvings. In Italy porphyry is traditionally used for roads, squares and courtyards, as setts, cleft slabs and kerbs. The Lombard material is part of this tradition, alongside the better-known porphyries of Trentino. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.
Look and veining
The colour ranges from purplish red to reddish brown, with grey shadings and small light specks. The natural cleft surface is rough and slightly irregular, with differences in tone from one piece to another. Sawn, flamed or honed finishes make the colour more uniform and suitable for interiors.

Care and maintenance
It requires little maintenance: brushing and washing with water are enough, including with a pressure washer. On indoor floors a stain-proofing treatment makes it easier to clean cleft surfaces.

FAQ
What formats are available?
Porphyry is typically worked into setts, random-length or irregular cleft slabs, sawn tiles, kerbs and steps; formats and availability are agreed in the quote.
Can it be used for surfaces carrying vehicles?
Yes, laid on a suitable substrate and in adequate thicknesses, as setts or slabs it withstands vehicular traffic.
How does it differ from Trentino porphyry?
Both are hard stones suitable for exteriors; the colour shadings and availability of formats differ. For matching, a sample is advisable.
