Krensheim Muschelkalk: complete guide

History and origin

It comes from southern Germany, where the Triassic shelly limestones known as Muschelkalk are among the most traditional building stones. The name refers to the fragments of shells and marine organisms compacted in the rock. These limestones have long been used for façades, urban paving and stairs. Look and veining

The grey-beige background is rich in shell fragments and small cavities, with variations towards grey-blue or yellow-beige depending on the bed. The slabs are lively and never identical. Honed finishes highlight the fossils, while bush-hammered or sandblasted ones make the surface more uniform and non-slip.

Recommended uses

Suitable for outdoor paving, façades, stairs, walls and pool surrounds, as well as interior floors and bathrooms. Not very suitable for kitchen worktops because of its sensitivity to acids.

Care and maintenance

Outdoors, periodic cleaning and, if desired, a water repellent are enough. Indoors use neutral detergents and a stain-proofing product.
