Indiana Limestone: complete guide

Indiana Limestone is an American oolitic limestone with a uniform grain and a light, neutral colour. It is chosen above all for façades, cornices and carved architectural elements.

History and origin

It is quarried in southern Indiana, in the United States, and is one of the most important building stones in American architecture. It has been used in a great many public buildings and skyscrapers, including the façade of the Empire State Building. Its ease of working makes it suitable for mouldings, capitals and sculpture. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.

Look and veining

The colour ranges from a light beige known as buff to light grey, with a very even texture made up of tiny spherical grains called ooids and fossil fragments. The slabs are fairly uniform, with variations in tone depending on the selection. Typical finishes are honed, sandblasted and sawn, all matt.

FAQ

What does oolitic limestone mean?

It means it is largely made up of ooids, small spherical grains of calcium carbonate, which give a fine, even grain.

Can it be polished?

No, it is normally used with matt finishes; it does not take a mirror polish like a marble.

Is it suitable for exteriors in Europe?

Yes, it was born as a façade stone; it should be protected with a water repellent and installed with details that prevent standing water.
