Peperino is a grey volcanic stone from Lazio, speckled with small dark inclusions reminiscent of pepper. It is chosen for architectural and outdoor elements with a historic, understated character.
History and origin
It is a compact volcanic tuff from Lazio, used for centuries in construction for portals, cornices, door jambs, columns and fountains. The name derives precisely from the dark specks that characterise it ('pepe' being Italian for pepper). It remains a valued material in restoration and in new buildings that relate to historic centres. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.
Look and veining
The background is grey, from light to medium, with numerous small black inclusions and sometimes lighter fragments. The texture is granular and matt, with slight variations in tone between slabs. Bush-hammered, brushed and sandblasted finishes enhance its texture; honed makes it smoother and more uniform.

FAQ
Is Peperino suitable for outdoor use?
Yes, it is traditionally used for façades, stairs and paving; with a water-repellent treatment it keeps its appearance for a long time.
What is the difference between Peperino and ordinary tuff?
Peperino is a more compact, durable volcanic tuff, suitable even for structural and decorative elements, whereas many tuffs are softer and more porous.
Which finishes are recommended?
For exteriors, bush-hammered, sandblasted or brushed, which offer grip; for fireplaces and interior elements, honed as well.
