Jaisalmer Yellow: complete guide

Jaisalmer Yellow is an Indian limestone with a characteristic golden-yellow colour, often rich in fossils. It is chosen for its warm colour intensity, rare among natural stones.

History and origin

It comes from the Jaisalmer area, in the Thar Desert in Rajasthan, where this stone has been used for centuries in local architecture, so much so that the city is known for its golden colour. Today it is exported for floors, cladding and finished pieces. It is available in more uniform or more fossil-rich selections. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.

Look and veining

The background is golden yellow, sometimes with ochre or honey tones, with small fossil shells and lighter or darker veins. Variability between slabs is considerable, especially in the fossiliferous selections. Polished, the colour intensifies; honed or brushed, it looks softer and matt.

Recommended uses

It is suitable for interior floors, cladding, bathrooms, stairs, cornices and inlays. Outdoors it can be used in mild climates; for kitchen worktops it is not recommended because of its sensitivity to acids.

Care and maintenance

Neutral detergents, a stain-proofing impregnator and prompt drying of coloured liquids are the main rules. Polished surfaces should be protected from abrasive foot traffic with doormats at entrances.

Pairings

  • black or anthracite grey stones for inlays
  • teak or rosewood
  • indigo blue fabrics

FAQ

Is Jaisalmer Yellow a marble?

It is often called marble commercially, but it is a limestone: it polishes well and remains sensitive to acids like calcitic marbles.

Is it suitable for inlays and patterned floors?

Yes, its intense colour makes it excellent in combination with black, white or red stones for inlays and geometric decorations.

Can it be used in the bathroom?

Yes, for floors and cladding, treated with an impregnator; for cleaning, avoid acidic anti-limescale products.

How do I order it?
