Onice Nuvolato: the complete guide
Onice Nuvolato stands out for its soft, shaded cloud-like pattern instead of the regular bands typical of many onyxes. It is a refined choice for those who want the translucency of onyx with a calmer effect.
History and origin
In stone terminology, the term 'nuvolato' (clouded) refers to a pattern made of diffuse patches and shading. In onyxes this appearance arises from less orderly crystallisation than the classic bands. Materials of this kind are sold on the international market from various origins. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.
Look and veining
The background, in cream, beige and light grey tones, is crossed by soft clouding and more transparent areas. The pattern has little directionality and is therefore easier to match between slabs, although colour and density vary. Polished, it shows depth and reflections; with a honed finish it becomes almost velvety.

FAQ
Does the clouded pattern lend itself to bookmatching?
Yes, but the effect is more delicate than with banded onyxes. Many designers prefer a continuous layout, which gives a uniform, soft surface.
Can it be backlit?
Yes: against the light the clouding turns into softly shaded areas of light and shadow, with a very natural effect that is less graphic than bands.
Can it be used in a windowless or very humid bathroom?
Yes, as wall cladding, if the stone is protected and the room well ventilated. The key is to avoid acidic detergents and to dry areas exposed to splashes.
How do I order it?
On request: tell us the surface areas and thicknesses and you will receive a quote and photos of the slabs, to check shade and pattern.
