History and origin
It is quarried in India and is commercially a granite, although geologically it belongs to the basic rocks such as gabbro. The golden flecks are crystals of iron-magnesium minerals that reflect the light. It is one of the most widespread blacks in the world for kitchens and bathrooms. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.
Look and veining
The background is an intense, homogeneous black, speckled with small golden or copper crystals distributed fairly regularly. Compared with other granites, variability between slabs is limited, but the density of the flecks can change slightly. Polished, it is mirror-like and makes the crystals sparkle; honed or satin-finished, it becomes a deep, matt black.
Technical properties (indicative)
| Classification | commercial granite (gabbro/norite) |
|---|---|
| Bulk density | approx. 2,900 kg/m³ (indicative) |
| Mohs hardness | approx. 6-7 |
| Water absorption | very low |
| Main use | interiors and exteriors |
| Acid resistance | high |
Recommended uses
Ideal for kitchen worktops, islands, bathroom tops, floors and thresholds, including outdoors. In polished finishes it readily shows fingerprints and limescale marks, which do not damage the stone but require more frequent cleaning.
Care and maintenance
A microfibre cloth with water and a neutral detergent is all that is needed, drying afterwards to avoid marks. Given its very low porosity an impregnating sealer is hardly necessary; avoid polishing waxes, which leave a film.
Pairings
- glossy white cabinet doors for a sharp contrast
- satin brass or brushed gold
- honey oak
FAQ
Is Star Galaxy a true granite?
In trade terms yes; geologically it is a basic rock similar to gabbro. In practical use it behaves like a granite: hard, low-absorbency and acid-resistant.
Does polished black show marks?
It shows fingerprints and hard water drops more than a light stone. A satin or brushed finish reduces this effect while keeping the dark colour.
Which thickness should I choose for the kitchen?
Worktops usually use 2 or 3 cm; 2 cm is lighter and suits slim edges, while 3 cm gives a more solid look.
How do I order it?
It is ordered on request, stating dimensions, thickness, finish and processing: we will send a quote and photos of the slabs before confirmation.
