Alabastro Oniciato
Guide

Alabastro Oniciato: the complete guide

Alabastro Oniciato is an alabaster with a banded pattern reminiscent of onyx, in white, cream and honey tones. It combines the luminosity of alabaster with the bolder graphic quality of onyxes.

Suitable for: BathroomWall cladding

History and origin

In the trade, the term 'oniciato' (onyx-like) refers to stones with bands and transparency similar to those of onyx. These translucent calcareous materials are available on the international market from various origins. They have always been used in decorative work and today mainly in light panels and furnishings. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.

Look and veining

Parallel or wavy bands in cream, honey and amber alternate with milky white areas. The pattern varies from slab to slab, with more transparent and more opaque areas. Polishing intensifies the contrast, honing makes it more subdued.

FAQ

How does it differ from Egyptian Alabaster?

Both are translucent and banded; Oniciato usually has bolder bands and more evident contrasts, while Egyptian is more uniform and soft. The differences should in any case be checked batch by batch.

Is it suitable for backlighting?

Yes, the banded structure creates a very decorative alternation of light and shadow. A modest thickness and a clear reinforcing resin are recommended.

Can it be laid as flooring?

Only as a decorative inlay in areas with little foot traffic. It is a soft stone that scratches and loses its shine with traffic.

How do I order it?
