White Onyx: the complete guide
White Onyx has a light background, from milk white to ivory, with delicate, barely perceptible bands. It is prized for its understated elegance and for the soft, even light it transmits when backlit.
History and origin
Like all calcareous onyxes, it originates from the layered deposition of calcium carbonate, which in this case produced crystals almost free of coloured impurities. White varieties are among the most sought after because they suit very different styles, from classic to minimalist. Batches of different origins are found on the market, with cooler or warmer nuances. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.
Look and veining
The background is white or ivory, with light veining, sometimes faintly honey or pale grey, running in bands. Variation between slabs is smaller than in multicoloured onyxes, but more transparent and more opaque areas always alternate. Polished, it looks almost glassy; with a satin finish it takes on a silky, understated appearance.

Recommended uses
Ideal for backlit walls, bathroom vanity tops and washbasins, headboards, furniture tops and decorative details. Avoid it outdoors, on walkway floors and wherever coffee, wine or oil stains are frequent, as they are very noticeable on a light background.
Care and maintenance
Use only pH-neutral detergents and non-abrasive cloths. On such a light background, a stain-proofing impregnator renewed periodically is useful; any marks should be treated promptly, before they penetrate.
Pairings
- satin stainless steel or brushed nickel
- bleached oak and sand tones
- Statuario or Calacatta marble for a total-white look with different materials
FAQ
What is the difference between White Onyx and white marble?
White marble does not let light through and has more defined veining, whereas onyx is translucent and has a banded pattern. Both are sensitive to acids, but onyx is more fragile and is chosen mainly for lighting and decorative effects.
Does it turn yellow over time?
The stone itself is stable. The filling or reinforcing resins, however, can yellow if exposed to strong UV light or heat sources; this is why quality resins and low-heat LEDs are recommended.
Can I use it in a shower?
Yes, it is suitable as bathroom wall cladding, provided it is protected and cleaned with neutral products. Avoid acidic limescale removers: limescale is best prevented by drying the walls after use.
